It's Monday 21 October and it's "Count Your Buttons Day"!
How random is that? Yes, it really is. Where would we be without buttons I wonder, they've been around for as long ad we have had clothing, pretty much. It's quite interesting that something as simple as the button has survived with little change really. In this digital work that we live in, you would think there was some 21st Century invention that would make the reliable old button redundant, but no.
I remember when "velcro" was the "in-thing" in fastening for just about everything, or so it was marketed. A friend of my Mum's had a jacket with this on and wore it when attending wedding. She becaem quite warm during the church ceremony and decided to unfasten her jacket. As she did, there was the unmistakeable "ripping" sound as she pulled the velcro fastening apart! Maybe that's one reason why the faithful old button is still with us?
I do have a collection of buttons, not intentionally though. Every time you buy a new item of clothing you get those cards or little bags with a spare or two and sometimes even some thread too. I store them all away in a couple of places, just in case.
I have a problem though, when I lose a button, I never get around to sewing a replacement back on. I loathe sewing in any shape or form. I utterly admire people who sew, especially those who create clothing for themselves or others, or even household items to adorn their homes. All I need to do occasionally is to sew a button on, yet I avoid it as much as possble.
I do succumb on occasion to attempt this task, usually when I see an item with a missing button as my OCD will overtake my loathing of sewing. Threading the needle is the first hurdle, then sewing the button on with enough thread to hold it but not so much that the thread ends up imitating a piece of rope!
It's so irritating as it is such a simple task; why can't I grasp the skill?
We all have things in life or at work that we avoid doing and they may be really silly little tasks like this one.
What are the things you avoid because you really struggle to achieve them, even when you try?
By the way, if anyone has some tips or is prepared to teach me how to sew a button on, please get in touch. I have clothes I can no longer wear due to lack of buttons!
Have a great week.
